Durban - The four-star Ocean Reef Hotel is nestled close to the shoreline at Zinkwazi on the North Coast, roughly 80km from Durban.

The hotel is directly linked to a secluded beach via its own private boardwalk. It is in an unspoilt natural habitat that includes KwaZulu-Natal’s longest lagoon which is frequented by izinkwazi (Fish Eagles), which perch along its banks.

The architectural design and ethos is a fresh Afro-Indonesian palette, using neutral colours and rustic tones to blend with the natural environment of milkwood trees, beach and bush. The complex is completely secure with automated gate-control access, a 24-hour guard, an electric fence around the perimeter and a guard house at the entrance to the complex.

The popular Bamboo Restaurant has a Meditteranean feel. The restaurant overlooks the ocean and seats guests inside and outside alongside the infinity pool in a lovely alfresco setting – the perfect place for leisurely, lingering meals.

There is a variety of comfortably furnished accommodation options – four standard en-suite twin rooms and a penthouse with two bedrooms (both en-suite). There are also self-catering units.

Six have three bedrooms, two bathrooms (main en-suite) with fully-fitted kitchenettes, seating area with tv, a dining/ entertainment area and balcony with braai. Seven have two bedrooms, two bathroom apartments (main en-suite) with kitchenette and seating area.

Ocean Reef has a conference venue that can accommodate up to 50 delegates with facilities for outdoor and other team-building activities. Some 100 wedding guests can be accommodated in the Bamboo restaurant.

Zinkwazi Beach is one of the many beaches on this stretch of coastline that form part of a nature conservancy. There is plenty to explore in the plethora of rock and tidal pools that are home to a wide variety of sea life, including sea urchins and brightly coloured fish. The swimming beach is protected by shark nets and the 7km long lagoon is a great swim spot for kids – and you might just find a weary mom or two taking a breather by floating in the water. The beach is renowned for water sports such as surfing and deep sea fishing.

Other bird life beside the fish eagles abounds in the surrounding indigenous coastal dunelands and forests. Ferry rides along the lagoon (dependent on the water level) are used for upriver bird spotting, wine tasting or simply to experience the relaxation of being on water.

Zinkwazi is close to the Zululand Birding Route, not far from several game reserves, lies in the heart of the the King Shaka Route and is close to many a historical Anglo-Zulu battlefields.
