Durban - Nambiti Private Game Reserve, an 8 000ha reserve near Ladysmith and Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, is home to the Big Five as well as cheetah, hippo and more than 30 species of plains game that roam the extensive grasslands and thornveld.

The Sundays River, which provides an abundance of water through the reserve, creates a sanctuary that attracts several rare bird species and an array of raptors and vultures.

Nested in the heart of the reserve is Springbok Lodge, which epitomises the ideal safari getaway.

Enjoy an “Out of Africa” experience under star-studded skies as you drift off to sleep, then wake to the calls of the wild and enjoy picture-perfect moments under the glorious African sky.

Springbok Lodge is a great choice for a value-for-money stay. Superb accommodation is offered in 15 elevated, luxurious, safari-style, airconditioned en suite tents equipped with open-air outdoor showers.

Activities offered at the lodge include game drives on Nambiti Private Game Reserve and birding, as well as bass fishing (catch and release) in the reserve’s well-stocked dams.

Guided or self-drive day trips to the nearby battlefields can be arranged. Golfing enthusiasts can also enjoy a round at the nearby clubs.

Then there is the option of heading off on an open game-viewing vehicle at daybreak or early afternoon.

A personal guide will ensure you get the most out of the experience. During a guided tour, you will be given a chance to stretch your legs and wonder at the sounds and silence of the bush, while drinking in majestic sunrises or sunsets.

On fine summer or warm winter nights, guests can arrange to dine around a crackling fire in the boma, an experience which is sure to be a highlight of your stay.

A cheetah interaction project is also available for guests.

The session starts with a talk about the cheetahs, their history and future conservation projects and goals. The interaction follows.

There is a height restriction of 1.45m – if you fall short of this requirement, you will be able to tag along and view the cheetah from the parked game viewer.

One-on-one interaction inside the enclosure with the two females lasts about 30 minutes. Photos can be taken at any time. The entire outing will take roughly 90 minutes.

Springbok Lodge rates are R1 895 per person per night including three meals, two game drives a day and hot beverages.
