Aloe View Rock Lodge is a beautiful, tranquil lodge set in breathtaking scenery on a 1 000ha farm called Somerset, just outside Hluhluwe. Two rivers – the Mzinene to the east and the Mhlosinga to the north – form part of its boundary.

The lodge’s name is inspired by the striking Aloe Marlothii, which is found in the nearby rock cliffs.

Apart from baboon, which are regularly seen, visitors can also spot a variety of antelope, leopard, hyena, crocodile and hippo.

This small and intimate lodge’s central location makes it a good place from which to explore Zululand and the Elephant Coast.

Aloe View Rock Lodge has been built with rock found on the farm and each of the five spacious bedrooms is tastefully decorated, has tea/coffee making facilities and air conditioning. The lodge can accommodate up to 10 guests so is ideal for family getaways or small corporate conference groups.

The mountainous area in which the farm lies forms part of the beginning of the Lebombo Mountain Range.

The original farm was bought in 1947 by Ulrich Koch and was subdivided in 1960. Ulrich met and married Gezina van Zuydam. Now 81, she still lives on the farm with her son, Bernard, and his wife, Odette.

After Ulrich’s death in 1994, the lodge was constructed by Bernard, who felt passionately about preserving is father’s legacy.

The Kochs are hands-on owners with an intimate knowledge of the area. They facilitate everything, be it bird watching, fishing at the dams, walks or sundowners at The Krans.

Since the lodge is situated in the centre of Zululand’s major tourist attractions the Kochs can also arrange outings such as scuba diving or snorkelling, whale watching and turtle tours in season, cultural tours and game drives, horseback outings, deep sea fishing and more.

You also have the option of merely taking in the spectacular views, enjoying a game of pool, or relaxing in the rim-flow pool.

The gracious dining room offers a choice between buffet and a la carte menus. Evenings are also spent around the braai in the boma.

Rates begin at a very reasonable R560 per person sharing on a bed and breakfast basis. Children up to seven years stay free if sharing with adults.
