The name Drakensberg was coined 40 years after the Boer settlers encountered the western boundary of the mighty Zulu Kingdom on their Great Trek.

A Boer father and son had reported seeing a dragon flying high above the cloud-shrouded mountain peaks. This 200km long “Mountain of the Dragon” has since witnessed many historical events in SA’s history, including the dramatic Battle of Spion Kop.

This battlefield is one of many intriguing attractions on the Drakensberg Experience route and Spion Kop Lodge’s owner and resident historian and battlefields expert, Raymond Heron, is legendary in the area – and internationally – for his passionate and spine-chilling tales about the history of the area, especially the famous battle.

Also located on this extraordinary route in the central Drakensberg is Bahati Tree Lodge. This up-market, well-appointed self-catering, wooden lodge has been built around the trunk of a beautiful tree some 4.5m above the ground. The two-storey tree lodge has every modern amenity necessary, including a Jacuzzi and huge walk-in shower with a full-length window showing off stunning views that overlook the Bell Park Dam and Cathkin and Champagne Castle peaks beyond.

Situated within the Champagne Valley is another hidden gem known for its lavish breakfasts. Guests at Acorn Cottages enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area with stunning views of the mountains and surrounds. The charming self-catering cottages are located near the many activities in the Champagne Valley, and after a long day exploring there’s nothing better than returning to your cosy cottage that feels like a home away from home.
