Durban - Family holidays are treasured times and that’s the reason Nambiti Private Game Reserve, in the northern KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa, makes a determined effort to offer educational, fun-filled activities for the young – and the young at heart.

Game viewing in Nambiti is an exceptional experience because it is the only reserve in the area with the Big Five and it has more than 40 other species of game including cheetah, giraffe, hippo, hyena, impala, eland and zebra. The river too offers excellent yellowtail fishing and the dams are well stocked with various fish species.

The reserve’s 22 000 acres boasts incredible biodiversity including savannah, thornveld, riverine bush, acacia trees and extensive grasslands that mirror the plains of central Africa. What better way to take in a geography lesson?

And there’s history too… the region has numerous memorial sites and at the entrance to the reserve there are monuments to the Boer and English troops who laid down their lives in the Battle of Elandslaagte. The hospital still stands within the reserve’s borders. Other local historical attractions include the Siege Museum, Town Hall Museum, the Statue of Ghandi, ‘The Twins’ (two Howitzers cannons) and others.

Less than an hour away is the majestic Drakensberg Mountain range - a World Heritage Site of extraordinary beauty. Here the adventurous can enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking, quad biking, white water rafting, 4x4 trails, mountain biking, horse riding, canopy tours, rock climbing, kayaking and fly fishing.

By night, when the sky comes alive, stargazing is a truly magical, family experience.

Nambiti Private Game Reserve is only 3½ hours from Johannesburg and 2½ hours from Durban so the young and fidgety won’t get too restless getting there – and it’s completely malaria free.
