Home to The Mercury Million Golf Classic next month, the Champagne Sports Resort has had an 18-month facelift, making it the perfect place to work and play. Following recent developments, the resort at the foot of the majestic Drakensberg mountains now has accommodation for up to 750 conference delegates.
The 40 new hotel rooms and four new luxurious presidential suites bring the total accommodation offering to 152 hotel rooms and 91 time-share chalets, of which the majority are three-bedroomed with bathrooms en-suite.
After the completion of the new Buttress Conference and Exhibition Centre and four new boardrooms, Champagne Sports Resort offers 16 conference venues. The Buttress Centre can seat up 1 350 delegates and host banquets for up to 850 guests at round tables.
Other venues include the Sentinel Room which seats up to 1 000 delegates cinema style and 720 classroom style; the Monks Cowl centre seating up to 550 people; the Summit Room seating up to 400 delegates; and more intimate venues ranging between 150 delegates to the private boardrooms seating up to a maximum of 16.
Also recently completed are the Amplett and Turrett conference rooms, each seating up to 90 delegates. Conference equipment includes the most up-to-date, controlled by Crestron hand-held controls through the bigger venues and all standard equipment through the smaller meeting areas.
Delegates have internet access in the hotel and the majority of the venues and can use the business centre.
Other recently completed additions to the resort include an extended dining room and largely expanded buffet, a new wellness centre and a coffee shop with adjoining lounge. The new buffet and dining area comfortably feeds up to 700 guests with little queueing.
The top-notch menu is rapidly gaining a reputation in the hospitality industry. To cater for bigger groups, there are now eight cooking stations when all buffets are operational.
The wellness centre includes an upmarket salon and gymnasium. The salon has five treatment rooms, comfortable changing rooms and a relaxing rest area with cane loungers that look up at the Champagne and Cathkin peaks. The gym is fully equipped for all forms of exercise including general cardiovascular and weight training.
Champagne Sports Resort also has a great reputation as a prime holiday destination. It offers a huge variety of leisure facilities including five swimming pools, five tennis courts, adventure sports putting, basketball, volleyball, bowling greens and kids’ and teenagers’ clubs.
There is also a wide variety of activities in the valley and all within a 10-minute drive of the resort.
Falcon Ridge has a spectacular birds of prey show, which is a must when visiting the valley. The world-renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir perform at the auditorium and also at resort venues when booked.
There is a new canopy tour in the valley, run by Four Rivers Adventures, which also has a teambuilding facility offering archery, quad biking, zip lines and white water rafting for the more adventurous.
Other cultural activities within the valley include candle-making, carpet weaving and pottery.
